Invisalign is a highly effective cosmetic dentistry approach using an orthodontic technique to effectively correct many different orthodontic issues. The process gives you a balanced, even smile.
The Invisalign method of straightening teeth can be more comfortable, pain-free and virtually invisible compared to traditional braces.
The more-comfortable teeth straightening method
Invisalign are thin, clear, plastic aligners (similar to a traditional mouthguard) which apply a constant force to your teeth, affecting their movement. Invisalign® are worn day and night but can be removed when eating, flossing or cleaning your teeth. As you change aligners, they’ll gradually move your teeth into the desired position.
What Is the Invisalign Process?
After an initial consultation with us, we’ll produce a 3D digital image of your teeth. A set of custom aligners, specifically made for you, are produced from this image. At this point, it’s usually possible to see a computerised estimate of how your teeth will look once the treatment is complete. Each aligner is worn for two weeks before moving to the next one in the series. Generally, treatment can take 9 to 18 months. A visit to us is required every 6-8 weeks. While the number of aligners needed is different for everyone, most people will need 18 to 36 aligners to achieve the final result.
Cosmetic Dentistry Advantages with Invisalign
There are a lot of reasons why people are attracted to Invisalign. It can correct several orthodontic issues like overcrowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, cross-bites, overbites and underbites. Additionally, Invisalign:
- Improved smile and confidence in your appearance
- Creates more space in your mouth which means more space in your upper airway
- Well-aligned teeth are easier to clean than crowded teeth
- Is virtually invisible as opposed to noticeable metal braces
- Allows teeth to be brushed and flossed as normal
- Can be removed for up to two hours
(needs to be worn 22 hours per day) - Causes less irritation to gums, teeth, or cheeks
- Tends to have little effect on day-to-day activities
Are Invisalign Results Permanent?
Results from Invisalign last just as long as the results from traditional braces. However, teeth tend to relapse, no matter which orthodontic treatment is used. It’s sometimes advisable to have a fixed retainer applied to your teeth. Alternatively, you may need to wear a retainer at night to maintain your new smile.
Another factor is to undertake exercises (called Oral Myology/Myofunctional Therapy) to promote the correct balance in the tongue, lips, and cheek muscles. This is often overlooked in orthodontic procedures, but at SHDC, we have exercises and work with oral myology practitioners to address the issues which caused the crowding in the first place.
What Are the Benefits to Aligning Teeth?
- By creating more space for your teeth, you make more room for your tongue and more space in the upper airway (nasal passage and sinuses) improving breathing
- Well-aligned teeth are easier to keep clean
- Improving your smile improves your appearance and confidence
If you’d like to be treated with Invisalign®, it’s essential to have a thorough assessment. We can advise you if it is the right treatment according to your oral health needs.
